Although Woolwich held a series of meetings as Garrison Meetings, and also combined with Blackheath later in the century, a steeplechase meeting was held in conjunction with Eltham on Tuesday 14th January 1845. The 4 mile steeplechase course, in the vicinity of Eltham, was reasonably well attended, with several four-in-hands present. The card contained two main races, the 3 mile Sweepstake which was confined to Officers, went to Mr Neale’s Duprez beating Cock Robin and The Colonel. The feature 4 mile event drew an entry of 13 and was won by Captain William’s Albert. This was the only record of a steeplechase meeting organised by the two places. |
